1.3 JD: What excites a candidate?

Similar to how a good product manager focuses on adding value to customers, a product leader needs to understand what candidates are looking for and provide (not just promise) them more and more value.

Beyond fair pay, candidates typically look for –

  • A good boss who can also be a mentor
  • Potential for growth within the company
  • Good culture and a collaborative work environment
  • A bold and inspiring vision of the company
  • Working on challenging problems
  • Learning
  • ESOPs that can grow (Side note: It is surprising that even in 2021, few VC funded tech companies don’t provide ESOPs to any of the employees)

Job Description documents need to address most if not all of these questions.

JDs need not have formal or rigid language. They can be written in a casual language and cool style that is both honest and appealing to the candidates

What are other ways to excite a candidate to explore a role in your company? Please leave your comments below.
